This project is a Van Gogh inspired artwork. Tissue paper is glued down to construction paper in various shapes, colors, sizes, etc. The construction paper an be any color as well. Next the students use a type of paint that glues down the tissue paper even better and dries clear. After the glue is dry, students can use sharpies, crayons, or another utensil to add lines to the paper. After that is done, another piece of construction paper is used to draw and cut out a landscape design. I did a city landscape for this project. Another media is used to add lines and shapes to the landscape. After that is done, the landscape is glued down on top of the tissue paper.
This can be used in various subjects as a project, but the one that comes to mind is a social studies project. If students are talking about different cultures, students can do this exact project with a few modifications. Students may only be allowed to use dominant colors that align with certain cultures. Also the landscape can be narrowed down to landscapes that pertain to the culture.
This was a fun project and is easily done. I also really like how the students have the freedom to do almost anything they want.
One way to implement art history is through history class itself. As a teacher we are always looking for ways to bring everything together. As part of the Renaissance unit, artists can be brought forth and projects like the one above can be done. Or like the extension activity above, when talking about different cultures, famous artists can be found on the internet and talked about at the same time as culture. Not only can artists be discussed but the art movements can be discussed; what was popular, what changed things, etc.
